How it works

From real Devanagari back to legacy keystrokes

This is the inverse of our Preeti to Unicode converter: it maps each Unicode glyph, matra and conjunct back to the Preeti key (or key sequence) that produces it.

01

Paste Unicode text

Copy the modern Nepali Unicode text you want to reuse in a legacy Preeti-only system and paste it on the left.

02

Instant reverse mapping

Each Devanagari letter, matra and conjunct is mapped back to its Preeti keystroke, including the vowel-sign reordering Preeti's font relies on.

03

Copy the Preeti keystrokes

Copy the result and paste it into a document or field set to the Preeti font, it will render as the original Nepali text.

Questions

Unicode & Preeti, answered

Why would I need Unicode to Preeti conversion?+

Modern Nepali text is written in Unicode, but a lot of old government templates, notice boards, InDesign/CorelDRAW layouts and legacy office software still expect the Preeti keyboard layout. This tool lets you start from Unicode (which you can search, translate and type easily) and get back Preeti keystrokes for that old system.

Is the output identical to what was originally typed in Preeti?+

For common letters, matras and conjuncts, yes. But three glyphs (झ्, र and ्र) each have two legacy Preeti byte sequences that render identically in the Preeti font, this tool always picks one, so it may not match the exact original bytes even though it renders the same. Reph (the flag-shaped र mark over a following conjunct, as in वर्ष or धर्म) is rebuilt as a plain sequence rather than Preeti's special positioning trick, most Preeti-compatible fonts still display it correctly. Bare ष without a following halant has no dedicated Preeti key and is rare in real text.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?+

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript; your text never leaves your device, so it is safe for private or official documents.

How do I verify the output is correct?+

Paste the converted text into a document or text box set to the Preeti font (or a Preeti-compatible font such as Preeti, Ganesh or Kantipur) and check it renders as expected. For an important document, also try converting it back with our Preeti to Unicode converter and compare it to your original Unicode text.

Does this replace typing directly in Preeti?+

No, it is a one-off conversion for reusing existing Unicode content in a Preeti-only workflow. If you are typing fresh text, typing directly in Unicode with a Nepali Unicode keyboard is simpler and avoids any conjunct edge cases entirely.

Sources & data note

Conversion maps the Unicode Devanagari block (U+0900–U+097F) back to the standard Preeti/PCS keyboard layout, the exact inverse of the table this site's Preeti to Unicode converter uses, with the same vowel-sign and reph handling reversed. A few rare conjuncts and reph placements are approximate, proofread important documents after converting.
