Bhote Koshi flood, 26 August 2026

An ice-and-rock avalanche in Tibet dammed a tributary of the Bhote Koshi and burst it. Rasuwa and Nuwakot were hit without warning. 270359 confirmed dead, hundreds missing, 748 MW of hydropower damaged, and a warning from thirteen months earlier that was never acted on.

Why does Nepal flood so badly, so often?+

Nepal receives about 80% of its annual rainfall in the June-September monsoon, across some of the steepest river gradients on earth. Add glacial lake outburst floods from a warming Himalaya, landslide-dammed rivers that burst, and settlement patterns that put markets, roads and hydropower on the valley floor, and the same corridors are hit repeatedly.

What is a GLOF?+

A glacial lake outburst flood: meltwater ponded behind an unstable moraine or ice dam releases suddenly, sending a debris-laden surge down the valley. Nepal has 21 identified potentially dangerous glacial lakes. A related and increasingly common variant is a rock or ice avalanche falling into a river, damming it, and bursting the dam it just built, which is what happened on the Bhote Koshi in August 2026.

The NDRRMA's BIPAD portal (bipadportal.gov.np) is the official incident database, and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology publishes flood forecasts and river-level telemetry.
