How it works

How income tax is calculated in Nepal

Nepal taxes personal income progressively, each slice of your income is taxed at its own band rate, not your whole income at the top rate.

01

Progressive bands

Your assessable income is split across the slabs. Only the portion that falls inside a band is taxed at that band's rate.

02

The 1% is social security

The lowest band's 1% is the Social Security Tax. Contribute to the SSF or an approved retirement fund and it is waived.

03

Deductions reduce it

Approved retirement contributions and insurance premiums (within legal caps) lower the taxable income before the slabs apply.

Questions

Income tax in Nepal, answered

What is the income tax rate in Nepal for FY 2083/84?+

For FY 2083/84 (2026/27), per the Finance Bill 2083, personal income tax is 1% on income up to Rs 10 lakh, 10% on Rs 10–15 lakh, 20% on Rs 15–25 lakh, 27% on Rs 25–40 lakh, and 29% above Rs 40 lakh. Individuals and couples are taxed on the same unified slabs.

How is salary tax calculated in Nepal?+

Nepal uses a progressive slab system. Your annual assessable income is split across the bands, and each portion is taxed at that band's rate, then added together. Enter your monthly or yearly salary in the calculator above to see the band-by-band breakdown, effective rate and take-home pay.

What is the tax-free income limit in Nepal for 2083/84?+

From FY 2083/84 the first slab covers income up to Rs 10 lakh (Rs 1,000,000), double the previous Rs 5 lakh threshold. This first band carries a 1% Social Security Tax, which is waived for taxpayers who contribute to the Social Security Fund or an approved retirement fund.

Do SSF contributors pay the 1% social security tax?+

No. The 1% on the lowest band is the Social Security Tax (SST). If you contribute to the Social Security Fund (SSF) or an approved retirement fund, that 1% is not levied. Tick the SSF option in the calculator to apply the waiver.

Is there an income tax rebate for women in Nepal?+

Yes. A resident woman with remuneration (employment) income is entitled to a 10% rebate on the tax payable. Enable the female-taxpayer option in the calculator to apply it.

How are couples taxed in Nepal?+

Up to FY 2082/83 couples (married, opting for couple assessment) had a slightly wider set of slabs than individuals. From FY 2083/84 the separate couple schedule was removed, so individuals and couples are taxed on a single unified set of slabs.
