How is the road distance calculated?+

The road distance and free-flow driving time come from OSRM, a routing engine, run once over OpenStreetMap's Nepal road network for every pair among 12 major cities and stored so the pages stay static. It returns the shortest drivable path between the two points, which is not always the same road a bus or truck conventionally takes.

How confident is the named highway match?+

It is a best-effort cross-reference, not a turn-by-turn trace of the OSRM route. Where both cities sit directly on (or just off) the same catalogued highway, the match is shown as a likely route. Where no single highway connects them end to end, we show the highway(s) near each city as a possible combination and say so plainly, rather than asserting a specific route with false confidence.

Why might the highway shown seem off for a short hop?+

For some short, high-traffic legs, for example near Kathmandu, the OSRM shortest path can follow a newer bypass, fast-track, or local link road that is quicker than the full historic highway alignment. Treat the highway name as the corridor the journey generally uses, not a guarantee of the exact road taken.

Does this cover every city in Nepal?+

No. It covers the same 12 major cities as Amarnepal's straight-line distance pages, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bharatpur (Chitwan), Butwal, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Janakpur, Dharan, Hetauda and Itahari. Adding more cities needs fresh routing data, which is out of scope here.

The straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance is computed with the haversine formula on WGS84 coordinates and is exact. The road distance and driving time are routed over OpenStreetMap's Nepal road network with OSRM, which returns the shortest drivable path. On some hill corridors that differs from the highway buses normally take, and real journey times run longer than the free-flow estimate because of traffic, road works and rest stops. The highway cross-reference is Amarnepal's own best-effort match against the highway catalogue's route endpoints and provinces, not an official routing of any specific highway authority.
