What is the difference between tola-aana-lal and a troy ounce?+
Tola, aana, lal and chatak are the traditional Nepali (and wider South Asian) jewellery-weight system, used at gold and silver shops when weighing ornaments and bullion. The troy ounce is the international unit gold and silver are quoted in on world markets (London, COMEX). Jewellers convert between the two constantly, this tool does that conversion instantly.
How many aana and lal are in a tola?+
1 tola = 16 aana, and 1 aana = 4 lal, so 1 tola = 64 lal. These are subdivisions used for weighing smaller ornaments and setting stones, where a fraction of a tola is easier to express in aana or lal than in grams.
Is a chatak the same as an aana?+
No. Chatak is a separate market-weight unit, not a subdivision of tola-aana-lal: 1 chatak = 4.5 tola. It is used more for bulk silver and general market weighing than for fine jewellery, so it is kept independent here rather than nested under aana and lal.
