Agriculture, veterinary, fisheries and forestry are among the most competitive technical pathways open to students who finish Class 12 (10+2) in Science or Agriculture in Nepal. Four distinct undergraduate degrees sit under this umbrella: the four-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.Sc Ag), the five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc & A.H.), the four-year Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (B.Sc Fisheries), and the four-year Bachelor of Science in Forestry (B.Sc Forestry). Each ends in a professional career track, from agronomy and extension to clinical veterinary practice and forest management.

These programs are offered by several universities, but two institutions dominate the applicant pool: the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) in Rampur, Chitwan, and Tribhuvan University's Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS). Purbanchal University (PU) and Far Western University (FWU) also run agriculture and forestry degrees through their own campuses and entrance systems. Because admission everywhere is entrance-based and merit-driven, the exam score, not just your +2 grades, usually decides where you study.

Candidates sit one exam and then choose programs by merit rank, so a strong CEE score keeps all four doors open. AFU, established by an Act of Parliament in 2010 (2067 BS), is Nepal's first dedicated technical university for agriculture and forestry, headquartered at Rampur, Chitwan.

The AFU CEE is a single-day objective test of 120 multiple-choice questions carrying 120 marks, to be completed in 90 minutes. The subject-wise marks distribution weights the core sciences heavily: English 22, Chemistry 22, Botany 22, Zoology 22, Mathematics 12, Physics 12 and General Knowledge 8. There is no interview or practical component; the CEE alone determines the merit list. For merit and qualification, AFU requires candidates to secure a minimum qualifying score in the CEE (commonly stated as 50 percent, i.e. about 60 out of 120) to be counted for admission, and the merit list is prepared purely on entrance marks. To be eligible for the AFU CEE, a candidate must have passed 10+2 in Science or Agriculture (or an equivalent I.Sc. / A-Level) having studied English, Chemistry and Biology of 100 full marks each, plus Physics and Mathematics. Because AFU uses one common exam, program selection is not decided before the test but after it. Tribhuvan University offers agriculture and animal science degrees through the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS), whose lead campus is at Rampur, Chitwan, alongside constituent campuses such as Paklihawa and Lamjung and several affiliated colleges. IAAS conducts its own bachelor-level entrance for programs including B.Sc Ag, B.Sc Horticulture and B.V.Sc & A.H., separate from the AFU CEE, so many students sit both exams to maximise their options.

Eligibility for the IAAS entrance generally requires 10+2 Science or Agriculture with at least 50 percent marks (or C+ equivalent) in English, Chemistry and Biology of 100 full marks each and Mathematics of 50 full marks, or an overall C+ (2.4 CGPA). The entrance test itself is commonly a 100-question, 100-mark objective paper of 90 minutes. A widely reported IAAS distribution is Physics 15, Chemistry 15, Botany 15, Zoology 15, English 15, Mathematics 15, Agriculture General Knowledge 5 and General Knowledge 5, with no negative marking and a 50 percent pass requirement.

IAAS prepares its merit list with 100 percent weight on the entrance score, and admission is offered strictly by rank and seat category. As with AFU, IAAS splits seats into regular (paying), full and partial scholarship, and reservation quotas across its constituent and affiliated campuses. The two routes look similar on the surface, but the exam design differs in ways that matter for preparation. AFU's CEE is a 120-mark paper that front-loads English, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology (22 marks each) while giving Physics and Mathematics only 12 marks each; a biology-strong candidate is therefore advantaged. IAAS spreads its 100 marks evenly at 15 marks across Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, English and Mathematics, and adds a distinctive Agriculture General Knowledge component, rewarding candidates who also revise Physics and Maths and know basic agricultural science.

The other big structural difference is program bundling. AFU uses one common entrance for all four technical degrees, so a single good score can lead to B.Sc Ag, veterinary, forestry or fisheries by merit choice. IAAS entrance leads primarily to its agriculture, horticulture and veterinary tracks. Both institutions build merit lists on the entrance score alone, apply quota categories, and refresh seats, fees and dates annually. Sitting both exams is a common and sensible strategy, since the syllabus overlaps and each opens different campuses.

For forestry specifically, AFU is a natural home because it has a dedicated Faculty of Forestry, whereas IAAS focuses on agriculture and animal science. Students set on forestry should also look at Purbanchal University and Far Western University, discussed next.

Beyond AFU and IAAS, Purbanchal University (PU) and Far Western University (FWU) run their own agriculture and forestry degrees with separate entrance examinations. PU offers a four-year (eight-semester) B.Sc Forestry through the Purbanchal University College of Environment and Forestry (PUCEF) in Gothgaun, Morang, and B.Sc Agriculture through affiliated colleges; admission is by PU's own entrance test on a merit basis. Eligibility typically requires 10+2 with Biology and Mathematics, or a three-year forestry diploma, with at least 50 percent marks or a 2.4 GPA aggregate.

Far Western University, based in Kanchanpur in Sudurpashchim Province, also offers B.Sc Agriculture, admitting students who have completed 10+2 or I.Sc (Ag) with at least 50 percent or a 'C+' grade (2.4 CGPA) and clear its entrance exam. Because these universities have fewer seats and campuses than AFU and IAAS, they are often used as additional options rather than a first-only choice, and their notices should be tracked directly on the respective university websites.

In total, several Nepali universities now award B.Sc Agriculture, including Tribhuvan University, AFU, Kathmandu University, Purbanchal University, Far Western University, Mid-Western University and the newer Madhesh Agriculture University. Applicants aiming for the field should map every entrance date, since exam windows sometimes overlap and each institution admits on its own merit list.

Preparation for every route in this cluster centres on the +2 Science syllabus, so consistent revision of Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Mathematics and English gives the widest coverage. For AFU, weight your practice toward Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and English, which together carry 88 of 120 marks; for IAAS, keep Physics and Mathematics equally sharp and add a layer of agricultural general knowledge and current affairs. Solving previous years' MCQ papers and timed mock tests is the most effective way to build the speed the 90-minute format demands.

On the application side, watch the official notice pages during the admission season (usually mid-year, after +2 results). Registration is done online through each university's portal, and you will typically need your +2 marksheet or grade sheet, character certificate, citizenship copy and passport-size photographs, along with the application fee (charged per program applied for at IAAS). Meet every deadline, since late or incomplete forms are rejected.

Finally, keep a realistic view of merit. Since selection is essentially 100 percent on the entrance score at both AFU and IAAS, and seats are split across paying, scholarship and quota categories, the number that matters is the closing merit rank for your chosen program, campus and category in the current year.
