The full story

History & context

Simara's place in transport history predates its airfield. Before the Tribhuvan Rajpath opened in 1956, the standard route to Kathmandu ran by Indian railway to Raxaul, then on the Nepal Government Railway — whose 1927 line ran Raxaul–Birgunj–Parwanipur–Jitpur–Simara–Amlekhganj — then by lorry or bus to Bhimphedi, and finally on foot over the hills, with goods riding the ropeway. Simara sat on the spine of that whole arrangement.

When RNAC began flying on 3 July 1958 with its single DC-3, Simra was one of the four first towns served, alongside Biratnagar, Pokhara and Bhairahawa — putting the corridor's name on Nepal's first domestic air timetable just as its railway was dying (the NGR lost its passenger service in June 1965 and its last freight in April 1968, killed by the very highway that ran past the district).

The Bara corridor has since become central to Nepal's transport future as well as its past: the 70.977 km Kathmandu–Tarai Fast Track expressway under construction by the Nepal Army terminates at Nijgadh, in the same district, where CAAN also lists the proposed Nijgadh International Airport among its under-construction fields.

Current status

Operational — a domestic airfield serving the Bara–Birgunj corridor.
