Route overview

Langtang Valley Trek

Langtang is Nepal's nearest substantial high-altitude valley to Kathmandu - a half-day bus ride opens up a verdant Buddhist valley hemmed by the Langtang Lirung (7,234 m) massif and the Tibetan border. The valley was devastated in the 2015 Gorkha earthquake by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche, but communities have rebuilt and the trail has fully reopened.

The 2015 earthquake triggered a devastating avalanche that buried the original Langtang Village, killing more than 350 people. The rebuilt village stands nearby and the trek is now a powerful journey through community resilience.

Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) dates to the 14th century and still operates as an active monastery. The adjacent cheese factory (Nepal's first) was set up by the Swiss government in the 1950s.

Tserko Ri (4,773 m) is an optional full-day extension from Kyanjin - a steep ascent rewarded by views of Langtang Lirung, Gang Chhempo, Shishapangma (Tibet) and Dorje Lakpa.
