Annapurna Circuit Trek
The Annapurna Circuit is one of the world's classic long-distance treks, circumnavigating the entire Annapurna Massif through contrasting landscapes - from subtropical lowlands and roaring gorges to the high-altitude Tibetan plateau fringe. The cultural journey is as dramatic as the geography: Hindu temples in the south give way to Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan-influenced villages in the north.
Road construction has shortened the traditional 200 km+ circuit. Most trekkers now start at Ngadi or Jagat and end at Jomsom or Nayapul, covering ~160 km on foot over 10–21 days depending on pace.
Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) is the trek's crux - a 7–8 hour crossing that must begin before dawn to avoid afternoon winds. Night accommodation at Thorong Phedi (4,450 m) or High Camp (4,925 m).
Manang (3,519 m) is the largest acclimatisation village on the circuit. A Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) post provides altitude advice and basic medical care.
The Annapurna Conservation Area (7,629 sq km, established 1992) is Nepal's largest protected area and home to 1,226 plant species and 478 bird species.
