About the area
Parsa adjoins Chitwan on its east and effectively extends that great Terai landscape. It began as the Parsa Wildlife Reserve in 1984, was expanded by 128 km² in 2015, and was upgraded to a national park in 2017, giving it 627.39 km² of mostly Siwalik (Churia) hills — around 90% sal forest — with a 285.3 km² buffer zone dating from 2005.
Its tiger story is one of recovery: from roughly four resident tigers in 2008, the park held 41 in the 2022 count, a striking rebound driven by improved protection and its connection to Chitwan's source population. It also supports wild elephant, sloth bear, gaur and a handful of greater one-horned rhinos.
Parsa is the eastern anchor of the trans-boundary Chitwan–Parsa–Valmiki Tiger Conservation Unit that straddles the Nepal–India border. By protecting the forest east of Chitwan it widens the room available to tigers and elephants ranging across one of South Asia's most important big-cat landscapes.
