About the area
The Manaslu Conservation Area, established in 1998 and managed by the NTNC, protects 1,663 km² of northern Gorkha around Mount Manaslu, at 8,156 m the world's eighth-highest peak. Its elevation sweeps from 1,400 m subtropical valleys to the nival zone of permanent snow, packing a full spectrum of Himalayan habitats into a single district.
The area shelters snow leopard, musk deer and Himalayan tahr among 33 mammal species and more than 110 birds, with a flora of roughly 1,500 to 2,000 flowering plants. Tibetan-influenced villages and monasteries in the upper valleys and the Tsum Valley add a strong cultural dimension.
Once almost unknown to trekkers, the Manaslu Circuit and the side-trip into the sacred Tsum Valley have become increasingly popular as a quieter, restricted-permit alternative to the Annapurna and Everest regions — a tightly managed flow of visitors that helps fund the conservation programme.
