About the area

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area was established on 11 January 2010, with management assigned to the NTNC for 20 years. Spanning 2,179 km² (one listing gives 2,197 km²) across Ramechhap, Dolakha and Sindhupalchok, it is named for the sacred 7,134 m peak of Gauri Shankar and borders Tibet to the north, forming part of the Sacred Himalayan Landscape.

Geographically it is a vital bridge, knitting together the Langtang and Sagarmatha (Everest) protected landscapes so that wildlife can move between them. It shelters snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan black bear and the Asian golden cat — whose westernmost Nepal record was made here in 2019 — among 34 mammals and 235 birds across 16 vegetation types.

The area takes in the beautiful Rolwaling valley and the Tashi Lapcha pass, and the classic Jiri-to-Everest walking approach passes through it. By linking two of Nepal's most famous mountain regions, Gaurishankar plays an outsized role in maintaining Himalayan habitat connectivity.
