About the area

The Blackbuck (Krishnasaar) Conservation Area is Nepal's smallest protected area at just 16.95 km², set in the Khairapur grasslands of Gulariya municipality in Bardiya. Established in 2009, it is a single-species micro-reserve built around one remarkable animal.

Its blackbuck (Krishnasaar, Antilope cervicapra) form the northernmost surviving wild herd of the species anywhere in the world — about 202 animals were counted in 2009 (73 males, 111 females and 18 calves). The herd was first noticed in 1975, after which a guard post and, in 1995–97, the purchase of private grazing land were used to protect it from the surrounding farmland.

Tiny and specialised, the reserve is a focused conservation success: a deliberate effort to hold a single threatened population at the very edge of its range, and a specialist wildlife stop for visitors travelling near Bardiya.
