The full story

About the area

The Api Nampa Conservation Area, established in 2010, guards Nepal's far-north-western frontier in Darchula district. Its 1,903 km² climb from 518 m to the 7,132 m summit of Mount Api (the neighbouring Nampa peak reaches about 6,757 m), and the area takes its name from those two mountains.

It forms part of the trans-boundary Kailash Sacred Landscape that links protected areas across Nepal, India and Tibet. Snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, red panda and Himalayan musk deer range its slopes, with high-altitude birds such as the Himalayan monal, snowcock and blood pheasant; around 54,358 people live within its boundaries.

Very remote and little visited, Api Nampa is an emerging trekking destination and a node on the wider trans-boundary Kailash pilgrimage and conservation circuit — a corner of Nepal where protection, sacred geography and cross-border cooperation meet.
