Student Visa Requirements from Nepal: Australia, UK, Canada, USA & Japan
Nepali students bound for Australia (Subclass 500), the UK (Student route + CAS), Canada (study permit + PAL), the USA (F-1 + I-20/SEVIS) or Japan (Certificate of Eligibility) all face the same three pillars: an offer of admission, verified proof of funds and, usually, an English-language test. This guide sets out each destination's financial threshold, English requirement, key documents and official government application portal, sourced from each country's own immigration authority.
| Australia (Subclass 500) | Living-cost proof AUD 29,710 (single); visa charge AUD 2,000 (from 1 July 2025) |
| United Kingdom (Student route) | Maintenance GBP 1,529/month (London) or GBP 1,171/month (outside), up to 9 months, plus tuition |
| Canada (study permit) | Proof of funds CAD 22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec (from 1 Sept 2025) |
| United States (F-1) | SEVIS I-901 fee USD 350 + DS-160 visa (MRV) fee USD 185 |
| Japan (student visa) | Certificate of Eligibility filed by the school; bank-balance guideline ~JPY 80,000 per month of stay |
| Nepal exit requirement | No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education for the bank foreign-exchange facility |
| English tests | IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT (UK needs IELTS for UKVI/SELT; Australia requires an in-person test) |
| Biometrics in Kathmandu | VFS Global (UK, Canada, Australia); US interview at the US Embassy, Maharajgunj |
The three pillars every destination checks
For a Nepali applicant, almost every student-visa system in the world rests on the same three pillars, no matter how different the paperwork looks. First, you need an unconditional offer or confirmation of enrolment from an institution the destination government has approved to host international students. Second, you must show you can pay for tuition and living costs without illegal work, using genuine, traceable funds. Third, most systems require evidence of English-language ability through a recognised test such as IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT.
On top of these, Nepal adds a domestic step of its own. Students leaving Nepal for formal study abroad are expected to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Scholarship Section); banks require this document before granting the foreign-exchange facility used to remit tuition and living costs and to endorse foreign currency for travel. Applicants should budget time for the NOC alongside the destination visa itself.
The sections below summarise the current, authority-sourced requirements for the five destinations most searched by Nepali students. Figures such as financial thresholds and fees change periodically; the amounts here reflect the rules in force in the 2025-2026 cycle, and you should always confirm the live figure on the linked government portal before you pay or apply.
- Admission: an offer/confirmation from a government-approved institution
- Funds: verified proof you can meet tuition and living costs
- English: IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT (test type and score vary by country)
- Nepal exit step: No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education for the bank foreign-exchange facility
Australia — Student visa (Subclass 500)
Australia's international students hold the Student visa (Subclass 500), administered by the Department of Home Affairs. The gateway document is the electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) issued by your Australian provider. You apply entirely online through an ImmiAccount, and you must also purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the full duration of your stay before the visa is granted.
The financial-capacity rule requires evidence of AUD 29,710 to cover 12 months of living costs for a single primary applicant, on top of one year's tuition and travel; higher amounts apply if a partner or children accompany you. The base visa application charge rose to AUD 2,000 for primary applicants from 1 July 2025. Since 2024 the former Genuine Temporary Entrant test has been replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, a set of questions probing whether you genuinely intend to study rather than use the visa to work or migrate.
For English, the Department accepts IELTS (typically an overall band of 6.0 with no component below 5.5, with lower thresholds if you take an accompanying preparation course), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and others. Crucially, the test must be sat in person at a secure test centre — at-home or online formats are not accepted for the visa.
- Visa: Student visa Subclass 500; apply online via ImmiAccount
- Core document: electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE)
- Funds: AUD 29,710 living costs (single, 12 months) plus tuition and travel
- Visa application charge: AUD 2,000 (primary applicant, from 1 July 2025)
- Also required: OSHC health cover, Genuine Student (GS) statement, in-person English test
United Kingdom — Student visa and the CAS
The UK Student route is run by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) on a points-based system: you need 70 points, awarded for a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor (50 points), sufficient funds (10 points) and English-language ability (10 points). The CAS is an electronic reference your university issues once it offers you a place, and it lists your course fees.
The maintenance requirement is fixed monthly amounts covering up to nine months. From 11 November 2025 these rose to GBP 1,529 per month for study in London and GBP 1,171 per month outside London, in addition to any outstanding first-year tuition shown on your CAS. Funds must satisfy the 28-day rule: the balance has to sit at or above the required level for 28 consecutive days, and the closing statement cannot be more than 31 days old when you apply. Applicants also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge to access the National Health Service.
Where an English test is needed, the UK requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — for example IELTS for UKVI — taken at an approved centre; an ordinary IELTS Academic certificate is not valid for the visa unless it is the UKVI version. Degree-level students whose course is taught in English can sometimes be assessed by the university instead. Applications are made on GOV.UK, with biometrics captured at a VFS Global centre in Kathmandu.
- Visa: Student route; apply on GOV.UK, 70 points required
- Core document: Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor
- Funds: GBP 1,529/month (London) or GBP 1,171/month (outside London), up to 9 months, plus tuition
- 28-day rule: funds held continuously for 28 days; statement <= 31 days old
- English: IELTS for UKVI / other SELT at an approved centre; Immigration Health Surcharge payable
Canada — Study permit, PAL and proof of funds
Canada issues a study permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You first need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Since 22 January 2024 most applicants must also include a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) confirming you fall within that province's capped allocation of study permits; from 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at a public DLI are exempted from the PAL/TAL.
The cost-of-living proof rose on 1 September 2025 to CAD 22,895 for a single applicant studying outside Quebec, shown on top of first-year tuition and travel; the figure increases with each accompanying family member. A common myth is that Nepali students must buy a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). In fact the Student Direct Stream, which required a GIC, was discontinued in November 2024, and Nepal was never part of it — so a GIC is now only one optional way to evidence funds alongside bank statements or an education-loan sanction letter.
Applications are filed online through the IRCC secure account. Applicants complete biometrics at a VFS Global centre in Kathmandu and usually a panel-physician medical examination. Standard processing typically runs several weeks to a few months from a complete submission, so apply well ahead of your intake.
- Visa: study permit; apply online via IRCC secure account
- Core documents: Letter of Acceptance from a DLI plus a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)
- Funds: CAD 22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec (from 1 Sept 2025), plus tuition and travel
- GIC is optional, not mandatory for Nepal (SDS ended November 2024)
- Also required: biometrics (VFS Kathmandu) and, usually, a medical exam
United States — F-1 visa, I-20 and SEVIS
The F-1 academic student visa is the standard route to a US university and is processed by the Department of State, with school eligibility overseen by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Your school issues a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) once you are admitted and have shown you can fund your studies. You then pay the I-901 SEVIS fee of USD 350, complete the online DS-160 application, and pay the USD 185 visa (MRV) application fee before booking an interview.
Note that a new USD 250 'Visa Integrity Fee', legislated in July 2025, is being phased in for most nonimmigrant visas; as of early 2026 collection systems were still rolling out unevenly across consulates, so confirm whether it applies at the time you pay. Interviews for Nepali applicants take place at the US Embassy in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, where biometrics are captured immediately before the interview.
Unlike the point-based European and Australian systems, the F-1 has no single fixed savings figure; instead you must demonstrate funds sufficient for the cost of attendance stated on your I-20, using bank statements, sponsor documents and, where relevant, scholarship or loan letters. Bring your I-20, DS-160 confirmation with barcode, SEVIS receipt, appointment confirmation, financial evidence, academic transcripts and test scores (such as IELTS or TOEFL, and any GRE/GMAT/SAT), plus a passport valid at least six months beyond your program start.
- Visa: F-1 academic student visa; interview at US Embassy, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu
- Core document: Form I-20 from an SEVP-certified school
- Fees: SEVIS I-901 USD 350 + DS-160 visa (MRV) fee USD 185 (a USD 250 integrity fee is being phased in)
- Funds: enough to cover the cost of attendance on the I-20 (no single fixed figure)
- Bring: I-20, DS-160 barcode page, SEVIS receipt, financials, transcripts and test scores
Japan — Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Japan uses a two-step system overseen by the Immigration Services Agency. Rather than the student applying first, your Japanese school acts as sponsor and files for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) on your behalf at the Regional Immigration Bureau. This is the decisive step: issuance of the COE means immigration has pre-approved your status, and it typically takes one to three months.
To support the COE, self-financed applicants generally must show a bank balance roughly equal to JPY 80,000 for each month they will live in Japan, together with a sponsor's savings certificate, a year of income evidence and documents identifying the source of the funds; financial certificates must usually be issued within the previous three months. You also supply academic transcripts, diplomas and a passport copy for the school to submit.
Once the COE is issued, the school sends it to you and you apply for the actual student visa at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu, submitting the visa application form, your passport, photographs and the COE. Because the COE stage is lengthy, Nepali students should begin the process several months before the April or October intake they are targeting.
- Visa: Student status via a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
- Who applies: your Japanese institution files the COE at the Regional Immigration Bureau
- Funds: guideline of about JPY 80,000 per month of stay, from a self or guarantor account
- COE processing: roughly 1-3 months; then apply for the visa at the Embassy of Japan, Kathmandu
Costs, timelines and practical tips for Nepali applicants
Because processing can span weeks to months, work backwards from your intake date. Book your English test early — IELTS, PTE and TOEFL all have test centres in Kathmandu, but seats fill up, and the UK and Australia have strict rules about which test versions or formats they accept. Confirm the exact financial threshold on the government portal on the day you assemble your bank documents, since these amounts are revised periodically and an out-of-date figure is a common cause of refusal.
Keep your money trail clean. Every destination scrutinises whether funds are genuine and available: sudden large deposits, borrowed 'show money', or accounts that dip below the threshold during a required holding period all raise flags, and the UK's 28-day rule and Australia's genuine-funds test are unforgiving on this point. Where a relative sponsors you, prepare a clear relationship and income paper trail rather than a bare balance certificate.
Finally, sequence the Nepal-side steps in parallel with the visa: secure your Ministry of Education NOC, arrange the bank foreign-exchange facility for tuition remittance, and ensure your passport has enough validity and blank pages. Building a complete, consistent file — offer letter, funds, English score and identity documents that all tell the same story — is the single biggest factor in a smooth approval.
- Book IELTS/PTE/TOEFL early; verify the accepted test type for your destination
- Re-check the live financial threshold before assembling bank documents
- Avoid sudden large deposits or borrowed 'show money'; keep funds genuine and traceable
- Complete the Nepal NOC and bank foreign-exchange facility in parallel with the visa
Student Visa Requirements from Nepal: Australia, UK, Canada, USA & Japan — FAQ
What is the financial requirement for an Australia student visa from Nepal?+
For a single Subclass 500 applicant you must show AUD 29,710 to cover 12 months of living costs, in addition to one year's tuition and travel, with higher amounts for a partner or children. The funds must be genuine, traceable and readily available, and the base visa application charge is AUD 2,000 for the primary applicant from 1 July 2025.
Is a GIC mandatory for a Canada study permit from Nepal?+
No. The Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) was tied to the Student Direct Stream, which was discontinued in November 2024, and Nepal was never part of that stream. Nepali students can prove the CAD 22,895 living-cost requirement (for a single applicant outside Quebec, from 1 September 2025) with bank statements, a loan sanction letter or a GIC — the GIC is optional, but a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter is generally required.
Which English test do I need for a UK student visa?+
Where a test is required, the UK accepts only a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), taken at an approved centre — an ordinary IELTS Academic result is not valid for the visa unless it is the UKVI version. Some degree-level students whose course is taught in English can instead be assessed directly by their university sponsor.
How much are the US F-1 student visa fees?+
You pay the I-901 SEVIS fee of USD 350 and the DS-160 visa application (MRV) fee of USD 185, in addition to your tuition and living costs. A new USD 250 Visa Integrity Fee was legislated in July 2025 and is being phased in for most nonimmigrant visas, so check whether it applies when you pay, as collection has rolled out unevenly across consulates.
Who applies for the Japan Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?+
Your Japanese school applies for the COE on your behalf at the Regional Immigration Bureau; you supply academic, financial and passport documents for it to submit. Processing usually takes one to three months. Once the COE is issued, you apply for the actual student visa at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu using the COE, your passport, photos and the visa application form.
Do Nepali students need a No Objection Certificate to study abroad?+
Yes. Students leaving Nepal for formal study abroad obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Scholarship Section). Banks require this before extending the foreign-exchange facility used to remit tuition and endorse foreign currency, so it should be arranged in parallel with your destination visa application.
