Overview

Gandaki Province takes its name from the Gandaki river system and centres on Pokhara, Nepal's tourism capital, set beside Phewa Lake beneath the Annapurna skyline. The province contains some of the world's most famous treks, including the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp.

North of the main Himalayan crest lie the rain-shadow valleys of Mustang and Manang, with their Tibetan-influenced Buddhist culture, while the southern districts descend into productive hill farmland. Tourism and remittances dominate the provincial economy.

Geography

West-central Nepal, from the lakes and gorges around Pokhara up to the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs and the trans-Himalayan deserts of Mustang and Manang.

Economy

Mountain tourism and trekking (Annapurna Circuit, ABC), remittances, and hydropower on the Gandaki (Narayani) river system; Pokhara is the country's leading domestic and international tourist hub.

Recommended provincial languages: Magar, Gurung (Language Commission, 2021 — alongside Nepali)

Sources & data note

Population, density and share figures are the final published counts of the National Population and Housing Census 2021 (National Statistics Office). Each province's total area is summed from the official statistical areas of its districts, so it stays consistent with the district dataset on this site. Provincial capitals are the permanent headquarters fixed by each provincial assembly. The 2015 constitution created seven provinces, initially numbered; each was later given a name by its assembly (Province No. 1 → Koshi in 2023 being the last).
