Overview

Bagmati Province, named for the sacred Bagmati river, is the political and economic heart of Nepal. It surrounds the Kathmandu Valley, home to the federal capital and the three historic cities of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur with their UNESCO-listed durbar squares.

Beyond the valley, the province reaches south to the subtropical plains of Chitwan and north to the Langtang Himalaya. It generates the largest share of national GDP and was the first province to adopt additional official languages, enacting Tamang and Nepal Bhasha in 2023.

Geography

Central Nepal, spanning the Terai of Chitwan, the Mahabharat hills and the Kathmandu Valley. It holds the country's political and economic centre of gravity.

Economy

Nepal's largest provincial economy — government, services, finance, manufacturing and tourism concentrated in the Kathmandu Valley, plus the wildlife tourism of Chitwan National Park.

Recommended provincial languages: Tamang, Nepal Bhasha (enacted 2023) (Language Commission, 2021 — alongside Nepali)

Sources & data note

Population, density and share figures are the final published counts of the National Population and Housing Census 2021 (National Statistics Office). Each province's total area is summed from the official statistical areas of its districts, so it stays consistent with the district dataset on this site. Provincial capitals are the permanent headquarters fixed by each provincial assembly. The 2015 constitution created seven provinces, initially numbered; each was later given a name by its assembly (Province No. 1 → Koshi in 2023 being the last).
