How to Join the Nepali Army: Recruitment Categories, Eligibility and Selection

Recruitment into the Nepali Army (officially the Nepalese Army / Nepali Sena) is centrally managed by the Directorate of Recruitment and Selection, historically known as the Jangi Adda, which operates under the army's General Headquarters. It is the single official body that announces vacancies, sets the standards for each post, conducts the selection stages and publishes results.

Vacancy notices, eligibility conditions, physical standards and application instructions are published on the army's official websites — the main site nepalarmy.mil.np and the dedicated recruitment portal vacancy.nepalarmy.mil.np. Candidates should treat these official channels as the only authoritative source; unofficial blogs and coaching sites often summarise notices but can contain outdated figures.

The legal framework for service is the Army Act, 2063 (2006), enacted after Nepal's transition, which governs the constitution, terms of service and conduct of the army. The written examination stage of recruitment is conducted under the supervision of a representative nominated by the Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, providing an external oversight element to the process.

There is no single way to join — the route depends on a candidate's education and the kind of role sought. The principal categories are the Sainya (general soldier) entry for the rank-and-file, the Officer Cadet entry for those seeking to become commissioned officers, and direct-entry commissions for technical, medical and other specialist services.

The Sainya route recruits general soldiers and is the largest-volume entry. Alongside it, the army recruits 'followers' in various trades (support and service roles). The Officer Cadet route leads, after training, to commissioning as a Second Lieutenant. Technical and miscellaneous-service entries fill specialist officer posts such as engineers, doctors, veterinary officers, nurses and aviation personnel, often through open competition.

All routes require Nepali citizenship and that the candidate be of good moral character: not a member of any political party, not involved in criminal activity or holding a criminal record, not a member of any organisation banned by the government, and not previously dismissed from government service on disciplinary grounds. Physical and health fitness to the army's standards is required across every route.

Age and education vary by category. The Sainya entry typically requires applicants to be aged 18 to 22 and to have passed at least Grade 8 (with prescribed minimum grades). The Officer Cadet entry sets a higher educational bar and uses the qualification level to set the age band, with Mathematics in the SLC/SEE examination generally required. Specialist technical and medical entries require the relevant professional degree and, where applicable, registration with the appropriate council.

Marital status can also be a condition: for the Sainya and follower entries, applicants are generally required to be unmarried, although this restriction does not apply to candidates already serving in the army.

Because the army's notices set precise, post-specific measurements, candidates must read the standards in each vacancy. As a general guide, published recruitment standards have required a minimum height of about 5 feet 3 inches for men and 5 feet for women, with weight appropriate to height, and a defined chest measurement for men (commonly around 32 inches unexpanded and 34 inches expanded).

Eyesight and freedom from physical defects are assessed during the medical and physical stages. Standards typically call for good unaided vision and the absence of conditions such as flat foot, knock knee, varicose veins, crooked fingers or significant scars and injuries, although limited relaxations may apply to some technical posts. These figures are indicative; the exact, current standards are those printed in the official vacancy notice for the post applied for.

Recruitment is a sequential, elimination-style process: candidates must clear each stage to advance. After applying against a vacancy, the typical sequence begins with preliminary screening — document/age and education verification, a bearing check, a pre-medical check and a physical fitness test — followed by a written examination, a detailed medical examination and a final interview.

The physical fitness test commonly includes a timed run plus exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups (with longer/harder standards for the Officer Cadet route than for Sainya). The written examination assesses subjects such as English, Nepali, Mathematics and General Knowledge; published schemes have used 100-mark papers with a 40-mark pass threshold. For officer entry, additional assessments — IQ/aptitude tests and a series of psychological and group/board evaluations — are used to judge leadership potential before the board interview and final medical.

Applications are made against a specific published vacancy. The standard procedure is to complete the online application form on the official Nepal Army portal (nepalarmy.mil.np / vacancy.nepalarmy.mil.np), then either print the form and submit a hard copy at the designated recruitment/selection centre or attend the centre in person to finalise it. Application fees are specified in each notice and differ by route (for example, officer-level open-competition posts have carried higher fees than enlisted entries).

The most important practical advice is to rely only on the official notice: it lists the exact posts, the number of vacancies, the precise age/education/physical standards, the examination scheme, the application deadline and the fee. Candidates should prepare documentation (citizenship, academic certificates and, for specialists, professional registration) in advance and apply within the stated window.
