What is the exchange rate of the Nepali Rupee (NPR)?+
The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at a fixed 1 INR = 1.60 NPR (100 INR = 160 NPR), unchanged since 1993. All other currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, riyal, dirham, ringgit, etc.) float and are set against the US dollar each banking day by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).
Why is the Nepali Rupee pegged to the Indian Rupee?+
Nepal and India share an open border and deep trade and remittance ties. Pegging the NPR to the INR at 1.60 gives price stability for cross-border trade and is the anchor of Nepal's exchange-rate policy. Because INR is itself the anchor, the NPR effectively floats against the US dollar through India's rupee.
Where can I find today's official NPR exchange rate?+
Nepal Rastra Bank publishes the official daily reference rates (buy and sell) on its forex page. Commercial banks and money changers then add a margin, so the cash rate at a counter differs slightly from the NRB reference rate.
